The Full Story

Why Choose Forest School Immersion?

"Out of this darkness a new world can arise, not to be constructed by our minds so much as to emerge from our dreams. Even though we cannot see clearly how it's going to turn out, we are still called to let the future into our imagination. We will never be able to build what we have not first cherished in our hearts. "

- Joanna Macy

Today's times are uncertain, the climate is changing, and we have an opportunity to choose the next chapter. We need the next generation of land stewards to fall in love with the earth. Forest School Immersions at WOW provide profound and informative experiences that will lead the next generation to be grounded, connected, and soulful leaders of the future.

Today, children are spending less time outside, a phenomenon termed Nature Deficit Disorder...

  • American children spend 10 minutes or less on average per day in unstructured outdoor play, compared to 5–8 hours in front of screens.

  • Research shows people who are more nature connected are happier and have lower levels of poor mental health, including depression and anxiety.

  • Nature is also shown to have an effect on our overall physical health, including blood pressure, heart rate, weight, immune system functioning, cognitive functions and more.

Generationally, we are spending less time outdoors than our parents, and our children are spending less time outdoors than we did. The impact is huge, and it's time to return to our biggest ally, the earth, to regain our health and wholeness.

What is gained from forest immersions at WOW?

  • Common Sense developed through direct experience of taking risks and observing the outcomes.

  • Aliveness and Agility at the sensuous playground of the outdoors, from physical challenges, to raw beauty, to memorizing sounds.

  • Inquisitive Focus develops as a willingness to stay on the trail of mystery, be wholly absorbed in curiosity and follow it using pattern tracking and intuition.

  • Caring and Tending for ourselves, others and the natural world looks like expressing needs, addressing concerns, and being in community.

  • Service to the Community involves the discovery of our unique gifts and offering those gifts to support the well-being of ourselves and the community.

  • Awe and Reverence comes from the knowledge and experience of being part of something bigger, of being in awestruck, of being in the presence of something powerful.

  • Self Sufficiency develops as experience becomes wisdom that is integrated into the everyday adapting and problem-solving

  • Quiet Mind involves the ability to be alert, present, peaceful, and aware outwardly and inwardly.

These benefits are only the doorway into the more beautiful world we know is possible. We know that reconnecting to earth based practices and the wisdom of our ancestors have profound developmental impacts on our psyches, mental and physical wellbeing, and the collective wellbeing of the planet.

Forest School Immersions gift the experience of being wholly connected, alive, and aware. Today's children need experiences like these more than ever. As Johanna Macey says, "we will never be able to build what we have not yet cherished in our hearts."

Forest Scouts is a weekly children's outdoor program that focuses on teaching ancestral skills, community skills and fostering fun in the outdoors. In this program, we dive deeper into practicing the skills of our ancestors as well as modern wilderness skills. We'll explore the scout or protector archetype. We ask who a scout is? We practice skills like camouflage, fox walking, bird language and invisibility. We go even further, tapping into 6th senses, insight, and awareness. The Scout archetype teaches us belonging to something bigger than ourselves, being an honorable opponent, and protecting what's valuable. This program seeks to give your child the opportunity to develop and explore their unique gifts and abilities.

This program focuses on...

  • Fire tending and building

  • Knife safety and carving

  • Naturalist skills and wildlife tracking

  • Bushcraft and wilderness skills

  • Camouflage and scouting

  • Ways of council

  • Ceremony and ritual

  • Mentoring and growth
